Vision, Mission & Objectives

The Silti-Butajera Geopark's Vision, Mission, and Objectives focus on promoting geological heritage conservation, sustainable development, and geotourism in Ethiopia's unique volcanic region.

Vision

To establish Silti-Butajera as Ethiopia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized internationally for its outstanding geological features, cultural heritage, and commitment to sustainable socio-economic development of local communities through geotourism.

Mission
  • To conserve and showcase the unique volcanic landscapes, geosites, and ecosystems of the Butajira Volcanic Field.

  • To develop sustainable geotourism that benefits local communities economically and socially.

  • To foster education, research, and awareness of geological heritage and natural resources.

  • To engage local stakeholders and international partners in protecting and promoting the geopark’s geoheritage assets.

Objectives
  • Identify, protect, and sustainably manage the significant geological sites within the Silti-Butajera area.

  • Promote geotourism as an alternative and complementary form of tourism alongside Ethiopia’s cultural and historical tourism.

  • Enhance local livelihoods by developing tourism infrastructure and creating employment opportunities.

  • Facilitate scientific research and educational activities to deepen understanding of the region’s geology.

  • Raise public and stakeholder awareness about the importance and value of geological heritage.

  • Integrate conservation goals with socio-economic development to ensure long-term sustainability.

These strategic goals align with Ethiopia’s broader efforts to develop geoparks and geotourism as drivers of sustainable development and heritage conservation, helping unlock tourism potential in less known regions while preserving natural and cultural resources.
